Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to describe how tourism industry can assist poverty relief. A computable general equilibrium model of the Brazilian economy is used to investigate the economic impact of tourism. The study analyzed also the distribution of income between rich and poor households. The results highlight the positive effect of tourism to all income groups although the benefits are not equal. This case shows that tourism has the potential to reduce income inequality.
