Abstract:Prices in colonial India fluctuated much more either than in post-independence India or in contemporary world. Being an agrarian economy without explicit stabilization policies, a feature India shared with other colonial economies, currency growth was sensitive to trade fluctuations, and real incomes to harvest size. This article generalizes that price movements in India between 1990 and 1935 can be explained by trade and harvest shocks, though the relative importance of each changed over time.
