Abstract: | After a temporary weakness in 1995, economic activity regained strength in the USA this year (1996). The recovery in Japan gained considerable momentum. In France, expansionary monetary policy will continue. In the UK, a renewed acceleration of economic activity can be expected. During the past winter, Italy experienced a serious slowdown of economic activity. In summarum, in the industrial countries, the pause in the economic recovery has ended. Monetary policy has stimulated economic activity: Since the spring of 1995, key interest rates have been lowered and the growth of monetary aggregates has accelerated. A further impulse came from long-term interest rates which decreased to very low levels in the course last year. Thus , the slowdown in the industrial countries was only mild and short-lived. |
