Abstract:British union density changed dramatically between the 1970s and 1980s In the 1980s density fell by 1.4 percentage points per annum. A quantitative analysis of 1945-86 changes is provided to find out how much of the 1980s drop in trade union density can be attributed to the Thatcher's government's industrial relations laws.
