Abstract:The Treaty of Maastricht makes the development of a common European industrial policy indispensable. In the debates about this policy two extreme positions can be identified: on the one hand there are the Northern members of the EC, which reject interventionismus and subventionismus and are in favour of economic liberalism, on the other hand, some southern states would like to favour some selected branches of the industry. Martin Bangemann, vice president of the EC Commission, tries to find the balance between the two extremities. His goal is to outline a policy which is acceptable for the parties included and which can improve the competitive position of the industry within the EC.
