Abstract:On January 1st 1994 the European Community entered the second stage of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The preparatory work required by this step, including the creation of the European Monetary Institute (EMI), has been completed. One of the most important tasks of the EMI will be to bring about coordination of national monetary policies. According to the Treaty of Union the prime responsibility of the Institute is to ensure price stability. National central banks remain sovereign during this phase.
