Abstract:Maintaining a positive balance of trade can be tough work for the most advanced market-driven economies, but for the Baltic republics the job is even harder. Just three years into their renewed independence, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania also are struggling with the major upheaval of converting from a command economy. Gradually the three Baltic republics are weaning their exports away from heavy reliance on the shaky economies of the Commonwealth of Independent States, but Russia remains the largest trade partner for exports for all three countries.
