Abstract: | In June this year, the EU Council of Labour and Social Affairs Ministers came to a political agreement on a common position on the 11-state draft Directive on European information and consultation arragements in multinationals. It may be adopted later, probably in autumn, this year. The UK is not covered directly by the Directive - it was indeed the prospect of such legislation which contributed to the Conservative Government "opting out" of the social policy Protocol and Agreement. Both statutory and voluntary interest in "European Work Councils" is high in the UK, which has information and consultation traditions at variance with most other Member States. British attitudes to the draft legislation and the increasing number of voluntary arrangements are examined. |
