Abstract: | The European Union's general framework directive on data protection is now perhaps as little as one year away from final adoption. Aiming to protect individuals who are the subject of data processing and thereby ensure the free movement of personal data within the European Union, this directive is of crucial importance to all organisations involved in the collection and use of pesonal information. By harmonising Member State legislation in the area of privacy and data protection it will create a level playing field across the Union, which will help both citizens and companies at a time when cross-frontier flows of personal data are predicted to grow at a pace. |
