Abstract:After a long hiatus, many Central and East European firms are now trying hard to recapture their old markets in the ex-Soviet Union. With mixed results. Four years ago Moscow pulled the plug on Comecon, the trading block it set up in 1949 to cement the communist world's economies together under Soviet hegemony. Russia's decision to abolish the clearing system of "transfer rubles" by which it had subsidised its neighbours' economies with cheap gas and oil, and paid premium prices for manufactures that would have been unsellable in the West, had enormous repercussions.
