Abstract:Should banks be large to be profitable in Euroland? Does the Euro force banks to be large? Should European banks merge? Alas, what is known about size and profitability in banking suggests that overall institutional bigness fails to enhance profitability systematically. Just as one example, consider the banks in the table below, which have the highest real returns among the largest 150 banks worldwide. This ranking illustrates that the most profitable banks are not the largest institutions, nor the ones with the broadest product scope or widest geographic coverage. Why so?
