Abstract:It is commonly stated that religion is loosing its once dominant position in contemporary Europe, supported by declining levels of church attendance. This article examines the degree to which European people are secular. It identifies differences between the speed of secularization in different societies. The empirical evidence supports secularization theories and contradicts to rational choice theories: religious pluralism produces lower levels of religiosity. Religious denomination and socio-economic heritages also explain religious behaviour in Europe.
