Abstract:This paper presents an exploratory study into social capital (henceforth as: soc-cap.) with its influence on the development of horizontal export-focused industry clusters (here as: i-cltrs.) for small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs). It is contended that higher levels of soc-cap. within firms can be externalized to other firms in i-cltrs. which makes the cluster more effective in international markets. The levels of evident soc-cap. are assessed across three different i-cltrs. within nine individual SMEs based in South East Queensland, Australia. Evaluated are attitudes of the firm towards its other cluster members. It is found that higher levels of soc-cap. within individual SMEs was being externalized to their i-cltrs. which helped the firms to develop long-term relationships and common objectives and also improve levels of trust among members.
