Abstract:Although the USA government's attitude toward countertrade (barter) ranges from ambivalent to negative, and many USA corporations eschew this unorthodox approach to international business, ignoring countertrade may mean losing out in the increasingly tough global marketplace. A short literature review is presented which reflects to the countertrade trends and the USA government position on countertrade. The virtues and drawbacks of countertrade are listed and parallelled. Countertrade as a global competitive marketing strategy is characterized. Some conclusions are drawn and recommendations for the USA government are provided.
