Abstract:Countertrade in its various forms accounts for a substantial proportion of world trade and its incidence appears to have grown considerably. Western exporters who adopt proactive approaches toward countertrade and build relevant competences obtain competitive edge. Firms which avoid or passively accept countertrade risk being disadvantaged in major overseas markets. An international comparison of exporters' attitudes towards countertrade is provided. A management decision routine to promote effective countertrade participation is proposed. Both official and independent surveys of the nature and extent of countertrading activities are reported. The results are presented in tables.
