| Abstract: | This article provides a new perspective on the workings of the kanban system. Specifically, it examines graphically the production, storage, and kanban cycles over time for a hypothetical group of end items and components. This approach provides insights into the dynamics of material flow which the more traditional card circulation diagrams do not. It illustrates the role of mixed model assembly, and examines factors which determine the number of cards needed, the sequence in which cards are processed at production points, and the level of work in process (WIP) inventory. |
