Abstract:The authors analyze spending and patent data for 300 major firms in USA, Europe and Asia. The firms were selected from Fortune magazine's Global 500 list, after eliminating banking, trading and other firms whose annual reports or web sites indicated they did not incur R&D expenditures, and then adding 30 top software firms. U.S. firms continue to be the major players in most industry segments, but low-cost innovators in China, India, Ireland, Israel, Korea, Taiwan, and elsewhere are potential challenges. Although the U.S. dominates the innovation race, smaller players like Taiwan, Israel and Finland have higher levels of inventive productivity.
