Abstract:Research into acquisition patterns of consumer durable goods was built on restrictive assumptions during the past 25 years. A model which would allow an independent estimate has been devised by Rasch; this is discussed and used to analyse data. Rasch scale values and fit statistics for 15 consumer durable goods are presented. The result of the analysis suggest that, while there is a set of durables for which a common acquisition order exists, some durables do not conform to this pattern. Acquisitiveness was found to be related to age, income, family life cycle and occupation. Change of the model's emphasis from looking for consumer subgroups to looking for goods subgroups is suggested.
