| Abstract: | All of Asia felt the rise - and the fall - of Endaka. For Japan, the Year of the Boar felt more like the Year of the Loon - as in wild. The yen soared. Then it began to fall back as the Bank of Japan and other central banks intervened. A trade war with the U.S. was only narrowly averted in June. Unemployment reached new heights. A mountain of debt weighed down banks and credit unions. A real-life earthquake that razed Kobe and nearby towns did not help. GDP growth for 1995, Japan's fourth year of recession, will likely be 1 %. |
