Abstract:This paper aims to examine the financial performance (hereafter as: fin-perf.) implications of a firm's strategic emphases with respect to business model (here as: b-m.) innovation (as: inn.) vs. replication (as: rpl.). In addition, it is also explored how the fin-perf. implications differ btw. larger and smaller firms. Based on survey data incl. top managers' reports from about 500 firms, analyzed are the differences in average profitable growth across firms differing in their strategic orientations. It is found that firms having a high strategic emphasis on b-m. innovation as well as a high emphasis on replication exhibit a higher average value of profitable growth than firms that do not strategically emphasize either dimension. Concerning a strategy putting a high emphasis on b-m. inn. but low on rpl., there is a difference found btw. small and large firms. Large firms with a high emphasis on b-m. inn. but low on rpl. exhibit, on average, weaker profitable growth than large firms with low emphases on both b-m. inn. and rpl. In contrast, small firms with high emphasis on b-m. inn. but low on rpl. exhibit, on average, stronger profitable growth than small firms with low emphases on both b-m. inn. and rpl.
