Abstract: | The relationship between innovation and growth in the US chemical and textile industries is analyzed. During the period 1967-82 these industries experienced different rates of productivity growth. In spite of stiff competition from foreign manufacturers American textile firms maintained a steady growth in productivity owing to a lot of technological innovations occurring in industries supplying to it. The chemicals' most innovations went into the process side - into energy saving and pollution control. This industry faced crisis due to sudden changes in petroleum prices. R and D effort was reduced and refocused in short-term and defensive projects. |
