Abstract:The Bhopal disaster where methyl isocyanate gas escaped from a Union Carbide plant led to more than 2000 deaths and caused illness in countless others. An accident such as Bhopal could occur in the safest manufacturing industry in the United States. The tragedy simulated moves in the U. S. A. that will change the handling and production of toxic chemicals as well as the dissemination of information on potential hazards and safety measures. The behaviour of a large chemical company following the Bhopal disaster is examined. The type of actions taken by this company in response to this events of low probability and high consequence is determined. The firm's behaviour is analysed using a conceptual framework.
