Abstract:This paper is to assess the link between variables specific to environmental consciousness and pro-environmental purchasing behavior. Such measures may be more useful than socio-demographic or personality variables. The results show that consumers' environmental consciousness can impact on their purchasing decisions. Attitudes are the most consistent predictor of proenvironmental purchasing behavior. Organizations aiming to increase market penetration for existing green product offerings should develop campaigns directed at increasing concern about environmental quality in the consumer base. However, consumers are suspicious of manufacturers' green product claims.
