Abstract:The medieval Roman Catholic Church attempted to monopolize the marriage market and get control over the institution from secular authority. The article shows the doctrinal innovations and evolving rules and regulations. To build the overall monopoly, the Church used rules surrounding endogamy, the definition of a valid marriages, and the escape clauses. The marriage regulations of medieval Church must be placed within broader context of the dynamic monopoly over the sale of assurances of eternal salvation.
