| Abstract: | The insurance industry is the most powerful and least regulated business in the US. The McCarren-Ferguson Act exempted this industry from most of the antitrust laws. Its various effects, among others its anticompetitive impact are discussed. The problem of forming joint ventures is analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages for the insurance industry to be regulated according to the antitrust laws. Comparisons with the state regulation are made. The fear of a stronger federal regulation is mentioned. It would create a new and larger bureaucracy. Insurers have powerful lobby. Insurance abuses and public interests are contrasted. |
