Abstract:For almost any nation, the question fo imports can be a touchy one. Consumers frequently eye goods from over the border as desirable, while domestic producers and manufacturers see imports as a threat to their economic survival. For Baltic consumers, some imported goods are less expensive than locally produkced items, and price often is an important consideration for residents who still survive on meager state salaries. In Latvia last month, the issue of imports helped lead to the downfall of Prime Minister Valdis Virkav's 11-month-old government.
