Abstract:If there had been no "cold war", the Central and East European countries (CEECs) would probably today be quite closely integrated in the European economy. Thus, the "normalisation" of East - West trade should involve not only the lifting of the cold war discriminatory trade arrangements but also the economic integration of the CEECs to a degree comparable with that of the other European countries. This article aims to quantify the effects of the new trading conditions on the CEECs' exports to five major regional markets.
