Abstract:Since 1978, China has gone through twelve years of net import of grain, and five years of net export (including 1992-1994). The net import of grain over the past 17 years totals 98.59 million tons, with an average annual import of 5.8 million tons. Since the mid-80s, China's export has accounted for 3-5% of the world's export of grain, and its import for 3-8% of the world's import of grain. In the 15 years to come, China's import & export of grain will remain unchanged as against the past 15 years. China will be able to stay basically self-sufficient in food. It is impossible and also unnecessary to import grain in large quantities.
