Abstract:Many retailers are making use of lower-priced goods offered by foreign vendors. The vendors, taking advantage of low wages in their countries, are able to undercut competitors operating in domestic markets. However, the characteristics of these consumer goods - clothing, footwear, food, drink, toys, furniture, appliances, electronics, household goods and so on - are dynamic and complex, usually being sold in discrete seasons. Low cost, though important, is not the only purchasing criterion for either end consumers or retail buyers. The author answers the following questions - what exactly the advantages and disadvantages of foreign imports as opposed to their domestic counterparts are; what trade-offs are involved; what the true costs are.
