Abstract:It is convenient in models of foreign trade flows to assume that consumers differentiate between product groups and places of origine, i. e. that the import function is separable in both these respects. This assumption is tested on the data of British import from six EEC countries desaggregated to three-digit SITC level. Results show that the separability assumption is not universally applicable.
