Abstract:The Central Electricity Generating Board submitted a Memorandum to the House of Commons Energy Select Committee. In essence the Memorandum stated that the CEGB was overly dependent on BCC /British Coal Corporation/, and that it could save 549 million GBP per year within three to five years by building up its purchase of imported coal to 30 million tonnes if it were allowed to do so by the government. In the article, this Memorandum is criticized. Considering the technical and economic factors which both invite and constrain the importation of steam coal for the generation of electricity, it is argued that constraints are more significant than is generally recognized.
