Abstract:Training delivered in the workplace by colleagues and supervisors is often dismissed with the derogatory epithet "sitting by Nellie". Mike Cannell thinks that Nellie should be treated with the respect she deserves, and cites new IPD research to show the way forward. "My interest in on-the-job training began while I was working for the former National Economic Development Office (NEDO). Talking to managers and walking around factory floors and construction sites, it was clear that there could be quite a lot of training going on.
