Abstract:This paper provides a summary of the evidence on teaching economics to undergraduates. It describes what economists are doing in classrooms and discusses the consequences of their failure to do more. It reviews what the research on teaching economics has to offer classroom teachers and considers alternative measures of educational outputs. Extensive consideration is given to nonlecture teaching methods that are more prevalent in other disciplines. Economic education researchers must consider the sample selection problems inherent in pre-post assessment, and adequately model the student and instructor decision making process.
