Abstract: | The article argues that competitiveness is born in the gap between a company's resources and its managers goals. The notion of strategy as stretch helps to bridge the gap between those who see strategy as no more than a pattern in a stream of incremental decisions. Strategy as stretch recognizes the essential paradox of competition: leadership cannot be planned for, but neither can it happen without a grand and well-considered aspiration. The essential element of the new strategy frame is an aspiration that creates by design a chasm between ambition and resources. |
