| Abstract: | An earthquake erupted in the Spanish banking system in late 1993. Its impact is still rumbling in a year which will go down as one of the most difficult for a long time for the Spanish banks, which are still suffering the after effects of Spain's recession. Tremors reverberated throughout the Spanish banking system in early 1994 following the shock intervention of Banco de Espana (central bank) into Banco Espanol de Credito (Banesto), Spain's fifth biggest bank, on 28 December 1994. |
