| Abstract: | The first hostile bid in Portugal's banking system was thwarted by the government. This will not stop the reconstruction of the finance sector. The author reports from Lisbon. Recent events in Portugal's banking system have seen two opponents squaring up for what would have been the biggest fight in Portuguese banking history. Normally amiable and easy-going Portuguese bankers were metamorphosed into terriers straining to sink their teeth into the opposition. |
