| Abstract: | Profits have begun to slide as banks shore up their capital base, reports Alison Warner. In 1994, European banks' growth, while pre-tax profit return on Tier One capital declined in most of the main European countries or groups of countries. This plateauing came after the recovery of 1993, when many European banks started emerging from the trough of the recession. In terms of number of banks, The Banker's Top 500 European banks exclusive annual listing continues to be dominated by Italy and Germany. |
