Abstract:The emerging country debt market enjoyed a stellar year in 1996, continuing its bounce-back from the turmoil unleashed by the Mexican peso crisis in December 1994. The West Merchant Bank price index (WMBI) roared ahead by 33.3% over the year, leaving trailing behind the International Finance Corporation's Composite Investable Index for emerging stock markets, which gained a paltry 7% in dollar terms. The WMBI also outpaced most developed world equity markets, as measured by the Morgan Stanley Capital International Indices.
