| Abstract: | Consumption of commercially-producted dog and cat food stood at 1,354,000 tons in 1997 with retail value of £1.48 bn. Volumes are in slight decline while market value continues to grow. Dog food accounted for 61.4% of the petfood volume and 55% of market value in 1997. Moist food took 52% of dog food volumes, 88% of cat food volume and 66% of market volume as a whole.
