Abstract:Conceptual questions tend to be neglected in debates on coordination and centralisation of bargaining. In particular, coordination is often treated as a "black box" in comparative analysis. This is why it is difficult to undestand the contradictory tendencies towards both decentralisation and coordination which have prevailed across Europe. Insight into the pre-conditions, practices and effects of coordination is provided in this article based on a crossnational comparison drawn mainly from case-study evidence from four countries.
