Abstract:This paper extends existing research by examining the influence of export market destination on firm performance using micro data on Irish manufacturing btw. 1991 and 1998 while Ireland experienced rapid export-driven growth. The study provides further evidence of the superiour characteristics of exporters relative to non-exporters, supporting the self-selection hypothesis that superiour enterprises are more likely to export. It is found export destination matters: the performance characteristics of enterprises exporting globally differ from those exporting locally.
