Abstract:Most strategic orientations are initiated at the top management team (TMT) level. However, very little is understood about how the effectiveness of strategic orientations (here as: orntn./orntns.) is inluenced by the composition of the constituents' functional diversity (as: f-div). This paper develops a contingency model examining this relationship under varying levels of environmental turbulence (as: env-trbl.) and inter-functional (as: int-fnc-al.) coordination (as: cordn.). It is suggested that under conditions of high env-trbl. functionally diverse TMTs will be less able to achieve greater strategic orntn. due to their functional differences. Conversely, when equipped with int-fnc-al. cordn., it is presumed that TMT f-div. will lead to greater strategic orntns. under conditions of high env-trbl. Based on data from TMT executives in the manufacturing industry, the model is tested. There is found support for a negative TMT f-div. X env-trbl. interaction and a positive TMT f-div. X env-trbl. X int-fnc-al. cordn. interaction on technological and entrepreneurial orntn.
