Abstract:Drawing from human capital approaches, this paper explores the relationship between entrepreneur's "inputs" defined here as their general and entrepreneurship-specific human capital and the entrepreneurial "outputs" defined here as business opportunity identification and pursuit. Based on a random sample of 588 owners of private firms, the authors test a number of theoretically derived hypotheses by using ordered logit analysis. The findings show that the entrepreneurship-specific variables "explained" more of the variance of the opportunity identification and pursuit. The results suggest that higher information search intensity is related to the amount of business opportunities identified, but not with the amount of business opportunities pursued. In addition, the use of publications as a source of information affected more to the probability of identifying opportunities than the use of information from personal, professional and business networks.
