Abstract:This article tries to find what lies beneath the traditional characterizations of national economies to examine local and sectoral diversity. Particular interest is paid on forms of capitalist organization at the level of localized sectors. Findings from a research based on detailed case histories of local economies are reported in four different types of production: modernized craft manufacturing (furniture), mass production (motor vehicles), high technology production (bio-pharmaceutical) and high-tech services (television film-making). In each case a local economy in Germany was compared with one elsewhere in Europe: Sweden, Hungary and the UK.
