Abstract: | In many flexible manufacturing systems, parts are fed to automatic machines in a prescribed orientation, which is often accomplished by part feeders. A feeder is a serial arrangement of a number of part-orienting devices. Methods of an important design aspect, to select the proper device design parameters and to serially order them, for maximizing the efficiency of the feeder, are developed. A configuration is briefly considered, wherein the individual part-orienting subsystems are all arranged in parallel. A real-world numerical example case and extensive computational results are also presented to illustrate the usefulness of the methods. |
