Abstract: | Core competencies are the collective learning in the organization, especially how to coordinate diverse production skills and integrate multiple streams of technologies. A lot of examples are provided. A map of competencies is also presented. False assumptions of competencies are mentioned and criticized. Three tests are offered to identify core competencies in a company. The costs of losing a core competence are examined. It is shown how a company can get ahead from core competencies to core products. Strategic Business Units and core competencies as alternatives are described and analyzed. Management should develop a corporatewide strategic architecture that establishes objectives for competence building. |
