Abstract:Online distribution of music rocks the music industry. The data compression technology is a boon to music lovers with Internet access, but record companies are furious and have fired the first shots against the digital enemy. However, if the industry is really so badly treated, why are people buying more music than ever before? CD sales are likely to top the 1 billion (pcs.) mark this year. Services financed by advertising are one possibility, giving listeners the impression the music being free, just like on the radio. There is information in brief on 'Net boost for the US music makers' as total U.S. online spending, physical products, downloads, and digital subscriptions (1999-2005).
