Abstract:This paper explores the drawbacks and benefits of chain affiliation. It can be a source of operating knowledge and economies of scale for components and also a source of strategic constraint. The effects of chain affiliation on the failure of component organizations and competitive dynamics in the Manhattan hotel industry, is demonstrated. Chain affiliation improves the survival changes of component hotels of Manhattan in most cases. The benefits to components vary with the nature of the operating experience and the number and distribution of components of chains, because chain memberships are not equal.
