Abstract:This article sketches out some basic relationships between per capita income convergence and international trade. A few recent papers which have linked income convergence to trade, are summarized. Trade helps cause the convergence for countries that are somehow linked by trade and convergence. The recent papers are also criticized in light of some simple trade and accounting theory. Trade between countries is not sufficient proof that trade helps cause per capita income convergence. An example is given applying some of the critique to real-world data. More careful work linking income convergence to trade would be a good thing.
