Abstract:This paper describes a practical application of the use of metaphors in organisations. Metaphors are applied as a diagnostic method prior to intervention. A metaphor is taken to mean a description of an organisation through a comparison with something other than itself. These metaphors might actually be termed similes but it has become common in organisational theory to use term metaphor to cover all figures of speech. The paper's perspective is pragmatic, focusing on how metaphors can be employed in organisational diagnosis. The notion of employing metaphors as an inductive method for organizational diagnosis has been explored just recently.
